What inspired you to choose your major and/or minor?
As a Latin immigrant in the United States, my experience learning a new language inspired me to major in Foreign Languages with a concentration in Spanish. My time in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes had a profound impact on me, inspiring me to make a difference within the Hispanic community. That’s why I chose to minor in Teaching English as a Second Language to help others on their language-learning journeys and open up new opportunities for our community.
How did your academic experiences in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages impact you?
My experience in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages has had a significant impact on my life, fostering both personal and academic growth. I am taking full advantage of the diverse opportunities the department offers, including enrolling in the Bachelors Accelerated Master’s program. These experiences have deepened my understanding of language and culture, and they inspire me to keep learning and contribute meaningfully to the field.
What accomplishment(s) during your time at Mason are you most proud of?
During my time at George Mason, I’m proud to have been accepted into the Bachelor’s Accelerated Master’s program, which is an amazing opportunity that means a lot to me. My involvement with the Hispanic Culture Review 2023-2024 has also allowed me to connect more deeply with my heritage and contribute to the university’s vibrant cultural community. Looking back five years ago, I never would have imagined that, as a newcomer with limited English but so many dreams, I would one day reach these milestones. Each step has been a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of seizing every opportunity.
Are there any faculty or staff members who made a difference at Mason?
All my professors in the department of MCL are truly wonderful and have impacted my life significantly, each one contributing to my growth in unique ways. I want to give a shout-out to Dr. Serafini, Dr. Bonilla, and Dr. Carla Burns, who have especially influenced my journey, guiding me not only in academics but also in developing a deeper appreciation for language, culture, and education. Their support and mentorship have been invaluable to me, shaping my path and inspiring me to give back to the community.
What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?
I am passionate about working with kids, and my plan after graduation is to contribute to Dual Language Immersion programs for elementary students. I believe these programs are a powerful way to help children develop bilingual skills while also embracing their cultural identities. Additionally, I am excited to teach English to children who arrive in this country, as I understand how important it is for them to feel supported in their language learning journey. My goal is to help these children thrive academically and socially, providing them with the tools they need to succeed and feel confident in their new environment.
What does learning a new language and culture mean to you?
Learning a new language means more than just acquiring new words, it is about connecting with a new culture and understanding a different perspective. To me, language is deeply tied to culture, and learning a new language allows you to explore who you are and where you come from. It opens doors to new opportunities, helps build bridges between people, and broadens your worldview.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time and/or what campus activities do you enjoy engaging in at Mason?
I enjoy being involved in community service activities. Currently, I am volunteering with a nonprofit organization that provides immigration legal aid. It’s rewarding to be able to support people in need, especially my hispanic community. Additionally, I have recently started learning Italian and I am highly motivated to continue progressing.
