Latin
Latin provides a window into another world—the ancient past. Studying Latin offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of the Latin language. But at the same time, they develop an appreciation of the literature, culture, history, and intellectual achievements of Roman antiquity that have contributed to the development of Western civilization.
The courses in Latin examine the language as well as its influence on the constantly changing modern English language. A minor in Latin complements many majors -- literature, language, history, philosophy, and the arts, all of which find their roots in classical antiquity.
The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers a 12-credit basic language sequence in Latin that fulfills the foreign language requirement as well as a minor in Latin. Students with some prior knowledge of Latin who wish to continue the study of the language should take a foreign language placement test before registering. The Foreign Language Placement Testing webpage has further details.
