As an ancient language still spoken today, Hebrew provides a unique window into modern Israel, one of the most fascinating and complex societies in the world. It is an essential tool for those pursuing Middle Eastern studies, Semitic linguistics, or research in nonconcatenative morphology, and a strong foundation for scholars interested in Afro-Asiatic languages.

Imagine reading ancient texts in their original language, exploring vibrant markets in Jerusalem, or engaging with Israel’s thriving arts and innovation scene. Hebrew connects you to a rich cultural and historical heritage while opening doors to careers in diplomacy, international relations, global business, and cultural exchange. Learning Hebrew gives you the skills to navigate a dynamic region, understand diverse perspectives, and build connections that span history and the modern world. It’s more than a language. It is a gateway to experiences, insights, and opportunities that last a lifetime.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages offers a 12-credit basic language sequence in the Portuguese language that fulfills the foreign language requirement. Students with some prior knowledge of the Portuguese language who wish to continue the study of the language should take a foreign language placement test before registering.
