Foreign Language Testing, Placement and Waivers

Students pursuing any BA degree at George Mason University must achieve intermediate-level proficiency in one foreign language. Other programs may also have foreign-language proficiency requirements.

Student may achieve this competency by taking a 12-credit introductory sequence of a foreign language at George Mason, or they may be able to test out of some or all of this sequence if they already come to the university with knowledge of a foreign language.  There are several ways to demonstrate proficiency.

Students with a disability that specifically affects language learning may also request an exemption from the requirement.  For details on exemption please see the policy page maintained by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences: https://academicaffairs.chss.gmu.edu/ugradpolicies/ugpolicies/flexemption
