Language Testing and Waivers
Students pursuing any BA degree at George Mason University must achieve intermediate-level proficiency in one foreign language by completing the basic language sequence of 110-201-202 or 101-102-201-202. The basic language sequence for Spanish is different from the other languages, so please get advising.
Student may achieve this competency by taking a 12-credit sequence of a foreign language at George Mason, or they may be able to test out of some or all of this sequence if they already come to the university with knowledge of a foreign language. There are several ways to demonstrate proficiency.
-
Use exam scores from non-Mason exams (AP, IB, CLEP and more)
- Take a Mason placement test to place out of some of the 12-credit introductory sequence
-
Take a Mason waiver test to test out of the entire twelve-credit sequence
-
Receive a waiver of the requirement through documentation of language competency
Students with a disability that specifically affects language learning may also request an exemption from the requirement. For details on exemption please see the policy page maintained by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences: https://academicaffairs.chss.gmu.edu/ugradpolicies/ugpolicies/flexemption
Note: Students who have been granted the Foreign Language Waiver and wish to further their language study are expected to register for a 300-level language course.
