Our department is at the center of the multilingual and global community that distinguishes George Mason University.  We have grown in numbers and languages over the past decade to include instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Classical Studies, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Persian, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish.  From our basic language offerings to our undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies, our integrated, technology-enhanced curriculum fuses students’ acquisition of linguistic proficiency with their development of cultural knowledge, critical thinking, and ethics.  We bring an entrepreneurial spirit to curricular design inside and outside of the traditional classroom, offering study and internships abroad, local field study / experiential learning, community service-learning, and autonomous, technology-enhanced courses for students’ immersion in real-world and simulated language environments.  Faculty publish widely within the fields of theoretical and applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, teaching with technology, film studies, gender studies, cultural studies, literary studies, and modern language pedagogy. Students, faculty and staff benefit from close connections with multiple educational and research centers on campus, as well as the Goethe Institute, the Korea Foundation and the Korean American Education Foundation, the Spain Arts & Culture, and countless embassies and cultural centers in the Washington, D.C. capital region.

We are proud supporters of the Students as Scholars initiative, administered through the Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, & Research (OSCAR).
