Advising for Undergraduate Students

Academic Advising General Information

Academic Advising in the Modern and Classical Languages Department at George Mason University is an integral part of the educational process. Academic advising helps you to plan educational goals and work to achieve them throughout a liberal arts education. The elements of that education include classes, co-curricular activities, work, and personal experiences. With interests and goals in mind, your academic advisor will help formulate academic plans.  Your advisor is dedicated to creating an atmosphere in which students can discover their potential, set and reach individual goals, explore and plan appropriate academic study, and prepare for success after graduation.

Please email the undergraduate academic advisor, Ms. Xi Chen at xchen8@gmu.edu if you have any questions. Please write from your GMU account. Students are encouraged to meet with the academic advisor at least once a semester. It is extremely important to meet with the advisor the semester before you register to graduate.

Advising appointments are scheduled through Mason Navigate, https://advising.gmu.edu/ssc/.

You might also use Degree Works in Patriot Web. It is a "virtual advisor" that will show you what requirements are missing from your degree plan. Please check https://registrar.gmu.edu/students/degree-evaluation/degree-works/ to see how to use Degree Works.

If you have foreign language waiver and/or placement test questions, please check https://mcl.gmu.edu/foreignlanguage-testing.
