MCLink! May 2026

Our department is at the center of the multilingual and global community that distinguishes George Mason University. We have grown in numbers and languages over the past decade to include instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Classical Studies, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Persian, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish.  From our basic language offerings to our undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistics, literature, and cultural studies, our integrated, technology-enhanced curriculum fuses students’ acquisition of linguistic proficiency with their development of cultural knowledge, critical thinking, and ethics.

Welcome

Chair’s Welcoming Message

Welcome to the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, where we research and teach languages, literatures, and cultures of the world as linguists and literary and cultural studies scholars. My first year as chair of the department has been such a rewarding experience. I am so fortunate to have the full support of our departmental leadership team and advisory committee. I have learned so much and have had the opportunity to reflect on so many things. So many of you have shared your personal and professional journeys with me to help me better appreciate how fortunate we are to have such a remarkable group of faculty and staff members at the MCL.

Looking ahead, I will continue listening to you all to familiarize myself with how we can work best together as a department. I want to emphasize better partnerships between MCL and other CHSS departments and programs, across the university, and between Fairfax and Mason Korea campuses. I believe only by working collaboratively together can we create transformative experiences for our students, staff and faculty members, both adjunct and fulltime, and both term and tenure-line, and benefit all involved.

Last but not the least, I want to thank our publications committee for initiating the wonderful tradition of a departmental newsletter. Please take your time exploring the newsletter and our departmental website, and please reach out to me at lluo5@gmu.edu for continued conversations anytime at your convenience.

With warm regards,

Dr. Liang Luo
