French at George Mason
A Rich Culture. A World Language. A Cutting-Edge Curriculum.
French retains its reputation as vehicle of refined arts and culture, a language of fine arts, fine dining, and high fashion, and of great literary and intellectual traditions from the medieval period to the Enlightenment and its postmodern critique.
But French is more than that. It remains the language of diplomacy and of Francophone peoples across continents in North America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Africa. It is also a major business language. If you want to work in areas like international business, politics, diplomacy, journalism, security, development, or counterterrorism, French can help you get there.
The French program at George Mason reflects all these facets of the language. You will study traditional subjects such as French language, literature, and culture alongside more innovative ones such as film and translation studies, French for business and international development, and the Francophone literatures of the Caribbean, Quebec, and Africa. Our teaching integrates up-to-date web-based and multimedia resources into the classroom and provides excellent opportunities for experiential learning such as internships and study abroad programs.
