German Studies at George Mason
Gateway to Global Careers, Culture, and Connections.
Germany boasts one of the world’s strongest economies, with a top-ranking GDP and unparalleled export power. Germans are also leaders in engineering and science. And what’s more, German has been and still is the language of many famous authors, philosophers, artists, and composers. Today, over 120 million people around the world speak German as their native language.
At George Mason, studying this influential language of worldwide connections, international business, engineering and science opens doors to global career opportunities. Through your German studies, you will explore the rich culture of the German-speaking world, gain insights into its customs, values and traditions, and engage with German literature, art, film, music, and thought in their historical and contemporary contexts. You will be instructed by dedicated faculty with diverse interests, who also offer many opportunities to engage with German beyond the classroom, including a study abroad program at Freie Universität Berlin, the annual Germany on Campus events and other cultural activities, German School Day, field trips, and more.
Beyond building strong language skills for communication in a variety of settings, you will develop a deep appreciation for German culture in its broadest sense—expanding your horizons and enhancing your global expertise.
