For Editors of Modern and Classical Languages Website
Welcome to CHSSWeb2! We have a help website: chssweb2.gmu.edu. If you are having problems with something and can't find what you need, please contact us at chssweb@gmu.edu. Please feel free to provide us with feedback on the help site and suggestions for additions or changes.
Changes
- Pages and sections are ordered to follow the main navigation. First, the home page, then For-Editor, then Contact, followed by the main links from the left navigation top to bottom. Don't move any of the main pages into or out of a section, as that will change the URL and the link from the main left hand navigation will break.
- New best practices in web advise editors not to embed hyper links in the text itself, but to put the links relevant to a page in resource groups at the end of the page. We redid that for many of the current English pages. This is current best web practice because it makes keeping links updated more easily. You can put the same resource links on multiple pages without having to update them in more than one place.
- The resources beyond Mason for all the languages are on the individual language sites. We created a resource group called: Resources beyond Mason for Languages and Cultures and added the relevant resource groups from each of the language sites. Please ask if it isn't clear how this works. It is a little complicated, but allows the same resources to be on both sites (MCL and the specific language site, e.g. Arabic, German, etc.).
- For the lists of films in the various languages: We made pages in each of the language websites for the films in the relevant language. We created a resource group on the MCL site called Film and Media Resources and added all the individual pages from the various languages to that resource group. This makes it possible for the same list to appear on the language site and the MCL site. They can be updated in one place but will stay interconnected.
Suggestions
- Language Lab page: We put it in the section Resource Page. We suggest that you do not use a table on this page in future semesters. The tables do not work well on the web. Also avoid centering text; that doesn't look good on web pages because in part because it will space differently on differently sized browser windows.
- The Arabic resources page is not useful in that every link goes to the same external website and that site has advertizing pop up windows. The list of Arabic regions and countries is a resource that is already on the Arabic site: http://arabic.gmu.edu/undergraduate/regions-countries. We have at this time unlinked the MCL page on Arabic resources and suggest that you delete it.
