The Hub, Ballroom
The Russian Program in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, in collaboration with the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program, co-hosts and co-organizes the annual ACTR (American Council of Teachers of Russian) Olympiada of Spoken Russian for local high school students. This event brings together motivated learners from across the region to showcase their knowledge of Russian language and culture in a dynamic and supportive environment.
A special highlight of the Olympiada is the involvement of our George Mason University students, who serve as judges and mentors. They take great pride in participating in this event as an opportunity to apply their advanced language skills in a meaningful, real-world context. Our students bring professionalism, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of community to their roles, offering encouragement and thoughtful feedback to participants. Many see this as a chance to give back, inspire younger learners, and share their passion for Russian while developing leadership and mentoring skills.
The Olympiada fosters a vibrant academic community, strengthens connections between university and local schools, and celebrates the continued study of Russian at all levels.
