Julius Caesar According to Asterix
Wednesday, March 9, 2022 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EST
Horizon Hall, 3008
The adventures of Asterix, the brave little Gaul, who holds out against the Romans (with
the help of a magic potion), are a defining part of modern French culture. Today, the
Asterix franchise amounts to 38 comic books, 14 animated films, 4 live-action feature
films (a fifth is in development), 15 board games, 40 videogames, and one theme park
near Paris. Julius Caesar is the main antagonist of the Gauls. He appears in most of the
stories. However, each live-action film presents another take on the Roman dictator. This
lecture will analyze his different portrayals, which reflect contemporary changes in the
perception of the historical Caesar.
