SPANISH 510: Methods of Literary and Cultural Studies

Spanish 510 is an introduction to literary and cultural studies in Spanish and is open to graduate students and advanced undergraduates with the permission of the instructor. Students will acquire knowledge on key trends in literary, performative and cultural studies, including literary and performative theory; cognitive approaches to literature and the scenic arts; and the critical study of forms of popular culture. Students will also learn how to use these various methods in the close analysis of Spanish-language literary texts, theater, films or television programs and other cultural practices, with an eye to revealing how these practices create meaning for readers and audiences across the Spanish-speaking world. The teaching of literature and performance literacy in schools will also be a focus in the course.
