Section Information for Fall 2018

COURSE DESCRIPTION

SPAN 306 is a content−based course that promotes a developing critical understanding of Latin American, Latinx, and Spanish histories, contexts, cultures, and communities through critical analysis of assigned cultural readings, films from different genres, and other audiovisual materials. In this course, students will improve their ability to use the Spanish language to interpret and comment on topics under focus through in−class discussions, debates, written essays, oral presentations and other activities. To facilitate communication, students will focus on building relevant vocabulary and grammatical knowledge outside of class as needed. This 3-credit course will be conducted in Spanish.

COURSE PREREQUISITES & PLACEMENT

SPAN 305: Spanish in Context I or equivalent, or permission of instructor. Heritage speakers who wish to major or minor in Spanish are encouraged to take SPAN 315 or another course at the 300 level to fulfill the requirements for the program. Please note that students who have already taken 309 or 315 should not be in 306.

Students unaware of their level should take the placement test offered at the Department of Modern and Classical Languages. Students who place into 300-level in the language are awarded 3 credits.

The test is free, does not require advance registration, and is administered in the Modern and Classical Languages Lab in Aquia Building 336, Fairfax campus. You should take it prior to the first day of classes in a new semester. For more information, access: http://mcl.gmu.edu/placement-testing or call 993-1220.

Students who have had exposure to Spanish outside of the classroom (e.g., in the home, living in a Spanish-speaking country, etc.), must take the placement test or enroll in SPAN315: Spanish for Heritage Speakers, a course designed specifically for students who have learned Spanish at home with or without previous formal instruction.
