Course Description:

Elementary Korean aims to introduce students to the basic level of Korean language skills as a second language.  The course is designed to enhance the students’ ability to speak, listen to, and write Korean with a contextual understanding of basic grammar.  Students will also learn some related cultural backgrounds to promote their understanding of Korean language.  The course will emphasize the following:

 

  1. Conversational skills-These skills will be practiced through a variety of class activities, such as role plays, presentations, free conversation, and games. 
  2. The exact use of grammar in both colloquial situations and official situations.  The knowledge of Korean grammar will be acquired by a variety of homework, lectures, and class activities. 
  3. Writing skills- In order to develop writing skills, students are required to keep working on their “Workbook” following the course work. 
  4. Vocabulary- In order to have a large vocabulary of Korean, students are expected to use their own dictionaries and flash cards and to understand various contextual meanings of certain vocabulary. 
  5. Understanding of the fundamental elements of Korean culture.

 

Required Materials:

Integrated Korean : Beginning 1 2nd edition, by Cho, Young-Mee, Hyo Sang Lee, Carol Schulz, Ho-Min Sohn, and Sung-Ock Sohn (Hawaii: University of Hawai’i Press, 2010) ISBN 978-0-8248-3440-1, workbook included.
