Many of you may already be familiar with O Tannenbaum, Wanderlust,

Energiewende, or Die Grünen, who continue to play a major role in

shaping Germany’s political and cultural landscape.

Internationally, Germany is recognized as a leader in climate policy

and a pioneer in renewable energy. Recent surveys show that

climate change remains one of the top concerns among Germans,

more so than in many other European countries. Where does this

strong environmental awareness and affinity with nature come

from? How has it evolved over time?

This course examines the Germans’ relationship with nature across

the centuries, exploring myths, literature, music, painting, film,

architecture, science, and politics. The course is taught in German

and strengthens all four language skills: reading, speaking,

listening, and writing.
