George Mason University is entering its second year as a member of the Clinton Global Initiative University Network (CGI U), a growing consortium of colleges and universities whose students commit to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Mason will provide $10,000 in funding to be divided among CGI U accepted students to support progress toward their CGI U commitments and/or to offset the cost of travel to the annual conference at the University of Miami, March 6 - 8, 2015. Funding for this initiative is provided jointly by the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being (wellbeing.gmu.edu) and University Life (ulife.gmu.edu).

All students enrolled at Mason through the 2014 - 15 academic year are eligible to apply and to develop a Commitment to Action, either as a group or individually. Commitments to Action, a unique feature of the CGI U model, are new, specific and measurable initiatives that address global challenges across CGI U’s five focus areas: education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation and public health. The final application deadline is December 1, 2014. Students can apply online at www.cgiu.org/applying_to_cgiu/. Students who apply should print or save a copy of their CGI U application and send to Mason’s CGI U representative: Alissa Karton (akarton@gmu.edu). Students may contact Alissa with questions about the application. Selection of students to attend the conference is conducted by CGI U; however, any Mason student may develop a Commitment to Action and request Mason funding to support it. Please note that funding is not guaranteed and depends upon the number and quality of requests received. Past speakers include Mason alumna Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International, as well as Madeleine Albright, Jack Dorsey, Muhammad Yunus, Hawa Abdi Diblawe, and Jon Stewart.
