Three New Books Published by Professor Liang Luo in September and October 2025

Professor Luo’s 2014 research monograph, The Avan-Garde and the Popular in Modern China (University of Michigan Press), has recently been published in Chinese by the prestigious People’s Literature Press (October 2025). Professor Luo rewrote the book in Chinese herself, and found it a unique learning experience translating her own work into her native language. Two more books are published in Chinese translation in September and October, 2025, with a leading scholar in modern Chinese literary and cultural studies, Professor Guimei Wang of Jilin University, as the translator. The first is the traditional Chinese character version of The Global White Snake (University of Michigan Press, 2021), published by Joint Publishing Hong Kong, a renowned publisher with a celebrated history. The second is the simplified Chinese character version of the same book, published by a leading university press in China, the Fudan University Press in Shanghai. The latter two Chinese books are results of years of collaboration and hard work by the author and the translator.

Professor Luo has been invited to three book events in Hong Kong (Joint Publishing Bookstore, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Hong Kong University) in late September, in addition to giving well-attended public-facing online book talks. She will also be presenting her new books through book talks and interdisciplinary workshops in late November at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and Beijing Normal University. The three books have made a number of recommended book lists in the past two months, and are generating considerable scholarly and public interest in the Chinese-speaking world. As a result of the Chinese publications, Professor Luo has recently been invited to consult for QingBai: Innocence, a Chinese-language experimental performance to be opened in NYC in December 2025, and she has been invited to Vassar College to lecture on The Global White Snake and its impact on contemporary cultural productions across the pacific in Spring 2026.
