Learning Beyond Borders: A Summer of Language and Discovery in Kazakhstan

Studying abroad is one of the most rewarding opportunities students in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages can experience. The Russian Program at George Mason University continues to support students in their pursuit of advanced language study through its collaboration with the American Councils for International Education. This partnership allows qualified students to participate in the Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP), one of the premier language immersion programs in the post-Soviet world.

This past summer, Yves Morrison, a Russian Minor and Schar School of Policy and Government major, spent an unforgettable summer studying in Almaty, Kazakhstan, through the RLASP program.

“I spent my summer in 2025 studying Russian in Almaty, Kazakhstan. I enjoyed learning about Kazakh culture and exploring the city and the mountains surrounding it. I had an amazing time visiting local museums, trying new foods (horse meat!), hiking, and even horseback riding,” Yves shared. “Most of all, I’m grateful for the opportunity to expand my knowledge of Russian and communicate with locals.”

Through a combination of intensive language instruction and cultural immersion, students like Yves develop a deeper understanding of the Russian-speaking world and refine their proficiency in authentic contexts. Living with a host family and attending classes taught entirely in Russian provided both challenges and rewards.

“The first week was hard. I was overwhelmed by the direct immersion in a new culture and doubted my language skills,” she admitted. “But by pushing myself to go out of my comfort zone, I realized my Russian was improving drastically. Now I feel much more confident and no longer afraid to make mistakes.”

Yves’s time abroad reflects the Russian Program’s commitment to combining academic excellence with real-world experience. A recipient of several academic scholarships, including the Mason Excellence Award, Yves balances her studies with Marine Corps Officer training and volunteer work with international faith-based organizations.

“This experience gave me more confidence not only in my language abilities but also in my ability to adapt and thrive in new environments. I hope to return to Central Asia in the future and use the skills I gained toward a career in government.”

The Russian Program at Mason continues to provide students with unique opportunities to apply their language skills beyond the classroom. Through study abroad, internships, and community engagement, students gain firsthand experience with Russian-speaking cultures while advancing their academic and professional goals. Whether in Kazakhstan, Latvia, or closer to home, these immersive experiences help students build confidence, cultural understanding, and a deeper appreciation for the global reach of the Russian language.
