George Mason students awarded in an essay contest at George Washington Institute for Korean Studies

Two students from George Mason University’s Modern and Classical Languages won second and third prizes at the GW-IU 2022 Korean Literature Essay Contest

Olivia Angel Collie and Alexandra Berrios, who are majoring in Korean Studies, have become winners of this honorable award for their essay about a Korean novel,  “I Met Loh Kiwan” written by Cho Haejin. The novel is about a North Korean refugee who is seeking asylum in a country where he doesn't speak the language nor understand the local culture.

Alexandra expressed appreciation for the opportunity to drive her into Korean literature that she wasn’t familiar with. She added, “I was able to explore this wonderful novel with the knowledge of historical context and translation skills I learned from the Korean Studies program at George Mason”. She encouraged students to participate in this competition in the future to expand their understanding of Korean culture through literature.

George Washington University's contest aims to introduce Korean culture through literature to students enrolled in higher education institutions. The contest is open to undergraduate students who are enrolled in colleges or universities in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area.
