Jacqueline Serigos publishes chapter on the statistical analysis of linguistic corpora

Assistant Professor of Spanish Jacqueline Serigos has published "Métodos de análisis estadísticos basados en corpus del español", in which she argues for the use of inferential statistics in the analysis of linguistic variation and she lays out the workflow for applying statistical methods to linguistic corpora.

As Serigos explains, linguistic corpora offer insights into language practices, as they provide large quantities of real-world observations that span various registers, times periods, regions and social groups. Statistical inferential analysis allows linguists to consider whether linguistic variation within corpora is arbitrary or if it reflects a true and significant underlying difference that may apply beyond the particular corpus under analysis.
