Course Description

The objective of this course is for students to develop all language skills in Korean and foster a deeper understanding of Korean business cultural products and practices. Students will demonstrate both linguistic skills and practical information that they need to conduct any kind of business with Korean or in Korea. The goal of this course is enhancing students’ cross-cultural understanding of Korean way of thinking and social codes to help their future careers. Students will achieve the objectives through authentic and contemporary materials such as articles in the economic section of Korean newspapers, news, commercials, local business advertisements, and descriptions of Korean college curricula for business majors. This instruction of this course is based on contents and task- based approach. Therefore, there are several tasks designed for students to explore Korean business settings including presentations, email or letter writing practices, job searches, and mock job interviews and reporting the interview with personnel from Korean businesses. Through this course, students will become familiar with Hanja (Sino-Korean Characters),learn business-related terminology, acquire the web-search methods used in Korean, understand etiquette and customs in business, and build knowledge about global and local Korean profit and non profit organizations. This course will be especially beneficial to business majors and learners who are seeking jobs in Korean global companies in the U.S, plan to reside and work in Korea, or are interested in improving language skills and cultural competence using contemporary recourses.

 

Course aims and Objectives

  • The aim of this course is to provide students both linguistic skills and practical information they need to conduct business with Korean.
  • Students will learn to use advanced Korean for business through language demonstration, in class tutorials and assignments.
  • Students will understand Korean way of thinking in doing business and develop their critical thinking and cultural awareness through different responses in the situational dialogues between American vs. Korean.

Develops intermediate- to high- level Korean reading, writing, listening and speaking skills while increasing culture awareness in Korean business settings through authentic materials and hands-on projects with people in the Korean business community. Offered by Modern & Classical Languages. Limited to three attempts.
