This course explores some of the major works of fiction of the 21st Century in the Hispanic world. With a transatlantic, integrative approach to Latino, Latin American and Iberian studies we will study novels and short stories comparatively and in relation to current trends in cultural analysis. Topics include human rights, memory and history, violence, globalization, immigration/nomadism, and intercultural communication. We will study main fictional works by the following authors: Roberto Bolaño, Rafael Chirbes, Juan Francisco Ferré, Junot Díaz, Cristina Rivera Garza, Lina Meruane, Claudia Salazar Jiménez, and Valeria Correa Fiz. Main objectives of this course include fostering comparative critical thinking, transdisciplinary research, and ethical commitment in the study of fiction. Additionally, being in a technology enhanced collaborative classroom, this course will allow students to develop unique collaborative skills that are much needed in today’s working environments.

Study of major writers in a particular generation or movement. May be repeated within the degree for a maximum 9 credits.

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
