GERM 365 - 001: Nature/Enviro in German Cultur

Many may already be familiar with O Tannenbaum, Wanderlust, Energiewende or Die Grünen, who achieved their biggest success to date in Germany’s parliamentary elections last year. Internationally, Germany leads the way in climate protection and is a pioneer in the development of renewable energies. A recent survey found that Germans are more concerned about climate change than other Europeans. Where does this environmental awareness and affinity with nature come from? How did it evolve over time? This course will explore the Germans’ engagement with nature through the ages in a diversity of fields such as myths, literature, music, painting, film, architecture, science, and politics. Taught in German to improve all four language skills (reading, speaking, listening, and writing).
