Section Information for Fall 2017
Philosophia was an activity of questioning and investigating that arose in the Mediterranean area in the 7th century BCE. Philosophia asked fundamental questions about the origins of the universe, the nature of reality, and the best ways to live.
How and why did this early form of philosophy arise? What challenges did it meet? What did it discover? What can this ancient work offer us that is of value today? To explore these questions, the course will introduce students to core texts of ancient philosophy, with close study of selected works of the pre-Socratic philosophers, plus Plato, Aristotle, and Lucretius.
