BA in Foreign Languages

You gain two worlds when you learn another language. You learn deeply about another culture and its people. And, perhaps more surprisingly, you learn about your own language, culture and self. Now more than ever, multilingualism and multiculturalism are invaluable in a globally connected world.

There’s no better place to study languages than at George Mason, a diverse university set in one of the most diverse communities in the world, the Washington, DC area. Students come from more than 130 countries and 80 languages are spoken on campus. Your classmates will bring with them their cultural wealth from all over the world. Our small class sizes foster this cultural exchange. It’s almost like study abroad without getting on a plane.

Washington, DC offers extensive opportunities for students with language skills. Our students have interned at the World Bank, the International Development Bank, the Organization of American States, the Library of Congress, and numerous local embassies and schools. Many students take advantage of study abroad to experience the living culture of the language they are studying. The flexibility of our degree allows you to specialize in more than one foreign language—and we offer you 15 languages to choose from.

The BA in foreign languages prepares students for teaching careers at the secondary school level, work in government, security, non-profits, international business, and graduate study and research in languages.
