Major in Foreign Language | Concentration in French

goals and requirements

The BA in foreign language with a concentration in French provides students the chance to study a variety of topics—from traditional academic fields like language, literature, and the culture of French—to less traditional subjects such as film studies and the Francophone literatures of the Caribbean, Quebec, and Africa. This unique combination of course offerings leads to a well-rounded liberal arts education that allows students to experience the full spectrum of the Francophone world.

This major will open doors to such fields as teaching, translation, the travel industry, diplomacy, and other international careers in such areas as law or business. Combined with another major, a major in French gives students an excellent change of success in the field of their choice.  The French concentration aims to develop students’ working proficiency in the French language and provide students’ a generalist's knowledge of the history, politics, literature, culture, geography, and economics of French-speaking countries.

Most students spend a summer in Paris and or Québec through Mason’s exchange study abroad program. The program enhances students’ command of the French language and broadens their knowledge of the cultures of France or French-speaking Canada. Additionally, students regularly organize a French roundtable to discuss various issues. Students’ experiences are improved by taking part in cultural events and exhibitions that are organized throughout the entire year in Washington D.C., a mere six miles from Mason’s Fairfax Campus.

The department also offers a minor in French.
