Jennifer Leeman, professor of Spanish linguistics in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, will spend the fall semester at the Universidad de Murcia in Spain, where she will lecture on topics in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics as well as aid in the supervision of doctoral students. She will also carry out a research project, an empirical study of language attitudes among international university students studying in Murcia.

Kayla Junior, a senior Global Affairs major and Korean Studies minor from Elkridge, Maryland, has been selected for the U.S. Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program.

Professor Jihye Moon has published her first volume of Topics in Korean Language and Culture as the leader author, which is designed to accommodate a wide range of courses and curricula existing for Korean programs today.

The first woman Editor-in-Chief of the journal since its founding in 1882 by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The Arabic program course

The residential research fellows for fall 2024 and spring 2025 are drawn from across a variety of departments and programs in the College of Humanities of Social Sciences as well as the Schar School of Policy and Government. Their diverse projects explore the CHR's 2024-25 theme of "humanity and its others."

Lauren Saravia led a professional development session for her Spotsylvania County Public Schools colleagues titled "Supporting Students in Spanish Heritage Instruction." She covered topics such as the characteristics of heritage learners and the reasons that traditional Spanish classes fail to meet their needs.

Dr. Jennifer Leeman gives invited plenary speech, “Critical language awareness as transformative pedagogy: Intersections with antiracist, decolonial, and social justice frameworks,” at the 11th National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language co-hosted by Texas A&M university – San Antonio and University of Texas – San Antonio last week (February 21-24, 2024).

Dr. Esperanza Román-Mendoza was an invited speaker at the recent Heritage Language Learning Symposium hosted by University of North Carolina - Charlotte where she gave a workshop titled, “Language learning technologies in mixed classrooms”

Giselle Quezada, a current graduate student in the Dual Master's concentration in Global Affairs and Spanish, was recently awarded a competitive “Increasing Access Scholarship” to participate in a study abroad program in Spain this summer 2024.
